2013 Pasty Cup
2013 Pasty Cup winners
The country’s fastest kitesurfers came to Marazion, Cornwall over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend 25th – 26th May, to compete for the Pasty Cup sponsored by the National Marine Aquarium & organised by Pasty Adventures.
Now in its 3rd year, for 2013 the Pasty Cup is round 1 of the British Kitesurf Racing Championships which for the first time this year has two titles for both men & women-Race fleet which is for IKA registered production equipment and runs to full IKA/ISAF rules and the Open fleet which is for any board up to a max of 60cm width with any kite.
With the forecast showing a max of only 7 mph all weekend a few people were scared away and we only had 9 entries rather than the expected 20-30. Shame as it was the hottest weekend of the year so far which pulled in a fantastic sea breeze both days allowing for 8 races over the weekend. On the beach for the spectators, we had come and try kite flying sessions run by BKSA kitesurfing school Pasty Adventures along with competitions and info from our sponsors and supporters.
After a short postponement by race officer Mike Winiberg, Race 1 got under way in 10mph of wind with riders all using their biggest kites from 15-17m on the 1 mile upwind downwind course set just off Marazion beach in the shadow of St. Michaels mount making for an amazingly colourful spectacle for the thousands of people enjoying the Cornish sunshine.
In the race fleet it was Youth World Champion Olly Bridge taking the win in front of his mum Steph with Pasty in 3rd and Mogsy having a great fight with Denzil narrowly beating him into 4th place.
Race 2 got underway just as the wind backed off a little. Olly & Steph broke away from the fleet with Denzil flying and beating Pasty to 3rd. It was then in for a pasty lunch supplied by Philps.
Race 3 started in slightly more breeze making for exciting racing although the result ended the same with Olly seemingly unstoppable at the front. A mistake on the way to the start meant Denzil missed this race by dropping his kite and having to swim back to the beach.
Race 4 was much the same although Denzil was back in the mix, narrowly beating Mogsy into 4th.
In the Open fleet it was Ollie Lawrence winning all 3 of their races on his Aguera 59 ahead of Matt Causon riding a Sector 60.
As the tide came in the wind started to drop making for a perfect BBQ evening, for which we were joined by the helpers and Lark sailors from Penzance Sailing Club.
Sunday dawned with blazing sunshine and zero wind. As everyone started to set up the sea breeze started to fill in as if on cue setting up for another 4 exciting races for the Race Fleet. Results were much the same with Denzil seemingly finding more speed overnight and beating Pasty in Race 1 & 3.
Olly Bridge was again unstoppable proving why he is a force to be reckoned on the World race circuit and took the Pasty Cup for the 2nd year in a row.
In the Open class Ollie Lawrence again won both of their races to win the Cornwall Tourism trophy.
Prize giving was then held on the beach with Adventurer, Stew Edge fresh back from his recent Everest summit presenting the Open fleet prizes & the crew from the National Marine Aquarium presenting the prices for the Race Fleet. After prize giving we all then went to Penzance Sailing Club for a party with a great band.
Huge thanks to all our volunteers and members of Penzance sailing club for the loan of boats and running the racing. We couldn’t have done it without you!
Thanks to our sponsors – National Marine Aquarium, The Seiners Arms & Philps Pasties
Also our supporters who provided assistance & donated some great prizes- Kiteworld magazine, Freeriders, Lodeys, North Kiteboarding, Hager-Vor & Cornwall Tourism

The Pasty Cup 2012
Report
Olly wins the cup
Saturday 26th August saw the country’s top kitesurf racers descend on Mounts Bay for the 2012 Pasty Cup organised by Pasty Adventures Kitesurfing School and run by Penzance Sailing Club.
With the buzz surrounding the announcement that Kitesurf racing is an Olympic sport for Rio 2016, the UKs top racers were joined by several newbie’s to the kitesurf race scene including 2 guys who were previously on the Olympic Windsurf development program and are now training for Kitesurfing in Rio, making a fleet of 10 kites flying around Mounts Bay.
Rigging up at Long Rock in 18-20 knts of breeze, organiser Lee Harvey went out first on a 12m kite along with Mogsy from Wales who was on a 13m. As soon as they made their way to the start line around 2 miles out to sea the wind notched up and most of the other riders noticed in time and chose more appropriate kite sizes from 7-10m as the wind meter on the committee boat read an average of 25knts with 31knt gusts.
With the amazing organisation of the race crew thanks to Mike and co. from Penzance sailing club, the 1st race started on time and was promptly won by UK Tour leader, Olly Bridge (15) from Exmouth followed by his mum, 4 time World Champ, Steph with 2010 UK Champ, Callum Edge fighting hard just behind. The next four races were much the same with Olly winning and some close fought battles along with the occasional big crash behind, as huge gusts blew down the race course. In the 6th and final race, Olly was winning yet again before deciding to head back to the beach on the 2nd lap of the 2 mile course as the wind notched up yet more, knowing that he had already won the prize pasty, due to being allowed to discard your worst result with 5 races to count. Callum seized the opportunity taking the win, which meant he finished just 0.3 points ahead of Steph while Lee struggled again as the breeze increased meaning he had to count a dnf.
It was then back to the beach for Prize Giving presented by Alex Hapgood.
The unstoppable Olly Bridge took the win and the Pasty Cup 2012 with Callum Edge nudging ahead of Steph for the 1st time ever. Other notable performances came from former windsurfer Tom Squires knocking Lee Pasty out of his normal 4th spot and local boys Ryan Crawford and Craig Smith with a great effort getting round after only recently buying race boards. It was then off to bed for a rest for some while others scored a wave and a few had to leave before heading to the sailing club for curry and a band.
All of the sailors loved seeing us kitesurfers out there and there was some great feedback such as-
amazing control, such speed, general praise and interest in how well we were going around the course and how good it looked. Mike even said he’d like to see and run an event with 100 kites, so maybe the Kitesurfing Europeans or Worlds will be in Cornwall one day soon?
Huge thanks to Penzance Sailing Club, especially Mike for providing the committee boat and being an excellent race officer, Barry and Robin on safety in the rib and for videoing, Joe of www.jnpevents.co.uk for the pics and scoring and big thanks to Mark Chadwick for enabling a kitesurfing event to be held at PZSC. We look forward to coming back for a bigger event next year.
Next up for the racers is an RYA Test event in Weymouth in end of September followed by the IKA Worlds in Sardinia 1st week of October. Meanwhile Lee is off to Mauritius for the 2nd stop of the 2012 KSP World Tourwhich runs from 7th -16th September.

The Pasty Cup 2011
Sponsored by Skinners Brewery
Organised by Pasty Adventures
The weekend of Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June saw the country’s top kitesurf course racers descend on Penzance for the Pasty Cup,
round 3 of the British KiteSurfing Association, South West Cup.
Setting up at Long Rock on Saturday with perfect winds, 20 kites were soon rigged and ready on the beach, however by the time of the briefing the wind had picked up to 30mph and racing started at 11.30 with a reduced field of 9 riders. Racing on a windward/leeward course of a mile in length with the start/finish line in the middle, the action was fast and exciting to say the least.
At the front of the pro fleet, a good battle commenced between Lee Harvey (Penzance) and Denzil Williams (Par) until Lee snapped a line during a big crash and had to be rescued leaving Gareth Morgan (Tenby) to come home in 2nd behind Denzil for races 1 and 2. Lee returned for races 3 and 4 taking out the wins in windy conditions now gusting over 40mph.
In the Ams fleet, Stubbie (Norfolk) sailed well in his first ever race event to take 4 bullets.
It was then all in for a Pasty lunch.
At 3pm the Penlee Lifeboat turned up along with a few Kernow Kitesurf Club members for the Long Distance race. A 4.7 mile course was set around Mounts Bay, starting at Long Rock and heading out towards Mousehole, across to the Promenade and back to finish at Long Rock. Lee Harvey came home first in an amazing time of 13.27 mins, with the rest coming in a steady stream behind, some even riding surfboards with no footstraps in super windy and testing conditions.
All the riders, helpers and supporters then tucked into a BBQ and Beer courtesy of Skinners, sharing stories of speed and near crashes.
--
Sunday came and what a difference a day makes. Now rigging their biggest kites the racers hit the water at 11am in nice sunny conditions. Suddenly a large black cloud came over and the wind died, leaving World champ Steph Bridge, as the only rider able to reach the start line.
After several more attempts to run races to no avail, race officer Mike Harvey, called it off at 3.30pm leaving Denzil to claim 4 out of 4 wins so far on this year’s race tour. Prizegiving was held on the beach shortly after where a few more beers were drunk and everyone refuelled on some tasty 9 Bars.
Thanks to all the helpers without whom we couldn’t have run-
Mike Harvey, Adam Harvey, Dave Sobey on the committee boat, Rich Gowers and Quinty Bartlett on rescue, Jane Acton and Debbie Kennedy on the beach, Will Treener and the Penlee Lifeboat on the Long Distance Race and all the others who chipped in to put flags up etc.
And our Sponsors-
Skinners Brerwery, North Kiteboarding, West Country Watersports, Freeriders, Lodey, 9 Bar, Kiteworld magazine and Golowan Festival.
