With 2019 drawing to a close its time to look back at some of the highlights. An awesome winter was topped off with Storm Gareth in march with the above shot of Lee at Porthleven, taken by Mike Newman featuring as a half page in THE TIMES newspaper. The first comp of the year was The Edge Cup , British Kitefoil Championships in Exmouth. Lee won the Masters division and the Silver Fleet (Inflatable Kites) for full report click here https://www.edgewatersports.com/10th-annual-edge-race-cup-2019/ A great summer ensued where we decided to focus more on coaching rather than beginner lessons. This worked really well with a lot of people coming for Foil coaching on lighter days, improving jumps and tricks when it was windy and getting in the waves on surfboards when it was wavey. We also ran numerous Windsurf Intro to Wave Sailing private coaching sessions. For 2020 we are going to continue to focus on Coaching as feel this is an area where many Kitesurfers and Windsurfers can greatly benefit from our knowledge and expertise to not only gain better skills but safety knowledge as well which could lead to saving lives. We will be updating the website over the coming months. The next comp was the British Kitesports Wavemasters which was held in Brandon Bay, Ireland at the start of October. Lee came away with the win in the Pro Mens fleet for the 7th year in a row. For the full report click here https://www.britishkitesports.org/news/bksa-wavemasters-2019-brandon-bay-what-a-week/ After Ireland we went straight to Scotland for the British Windsurf Championships Round 1 - The Tiree Wave Classic. After a great week Lee cam away with 2nd in the Masters Fleet. It was then home to Cornwall and Round 2 - The Cornwall Wave Classic. Crazy stormy weather with 70mph winds in the morning slowly died off towards the final of the Masters fleet, however Lee managed to sail to 3rd place, winning the 2019 British Wavesailing Masters Title to complete the hat trick of British Champion in 3 different windsport disciplines - Kitefoil, Kitewave, Windsurf! Over 30 entrants from all round the country including 1 German, 3 Frenchmen and 1 Irish lady gathered on the beach to battle out across 2 fleets, Pros and Ams. With grey skies and light winds I hit the water using the Aero Ultralight 17m and Ketos Foil Race2, ready for 3 races back 2 back. Unfortunately as the 5 minute signal sounded it started raining and everyone ended up getting rescued as the wind completely vanished. It wasn’t long before the sun came out and the wind was back at 12- 15 knts perfect for the Aero UL 14m on 18m lines. I hit the first start perfectly and was instantly please with my pointing and speed rounding the windward mark in 5th not too far behind the front 4 who are all ranked inside the top 15 in the World. All was going good until the last leg of the 3 lap windward leeward course when a small mistake allowed the 3 French guys past before the finish. Race 2 and I made it around the first mark in front of Olly Bridge riding the new Flysurfer Sonic Race 15m. One of the best moments for me was managing to hold Olly off downwind until just before the mark where he overtook and went onto win while I comfortably kept hold of 5th with no mistakes. This gave me great confidence going in for lunch knowing my kites and foil is as fast as the best in the World. The sun continued to shine for the afternoon and the sw breeze picked up although also became very gusty going from 18 – 22 knts. I went for the Aero UL 11m for the 3 races back 2 back. My speed was still very good at the front of the chasing pack for most of the races but fatigue was starting to set in on my legs and too often I made a mistake on the last leg to lose my 5th spot. Sunday and the weather was much nicer with glorious sunshine and a southerly 12-15knt breeze perfect for the Aero 14. Three races in the morning followed by 3 races in the afternoon, we had some great racing and I enjoyed some great battles with the 3 Frenchmen. Holding 5th place after 2 laps in nearly all races I again made too many mistakes on the last downwind legs or into the finish to end up 8th Overall in the Edge Cup.
Happy with achieving my goal of 4th in the British Championship and with the speed of the kites and foil, it’s now time to train more to improve my leg stamina so I don’t make any mistakes at the next event. Thanks to Steph and the Edge Watersports crew for running a great event and my sponsors for the great kit – Ketos Foils, Peter Lynn, ION & Pasty Adventures Results: Edge cup 1st Olly Bridge, 2nd Guy Bridge, 3rd Benni Boeli. Have Fun and Stay Safe Lee 'Pasty' Harvey This weekend saw the Legend of the Bay event being run for the 2nd time at Watergate Bay near Newquay. In this unique event athletes compete in Kitesurfing and Stand Up Paddle boarding to find the best overall waterman who claims the titleof Legend of the Bay. As in 2013 Lee dominated the kitesurfing side of the event with the qualifiers held on saturday 18th april in tricky offshore conditions. Despite the small waves Pasty perfomed some powerful and stylish turns to advance to the final without losing a heat. The final of the kite was held on sunday 19th april in much different conditions, a light sideshore wind with double overhead waves, Lee again dominated with some high scoring rides to take the win infront of Josh Coombes in 2nd and Neal Gent 3rd. In the SUP side of the event, held on Sunday, things were a little different with the conditions showing everyone who was boss with 8ft closeout sets making the paddle out somehwhat tricky at times. Lee managed to make it to the quarter finals and 9th place to give him 3rd Overall while Newquay locals Dom Moore and Josh Coombes made it all the way to the final. With Dave Ewer nailing so awesome rides he took the win while Dom battled into 2nd place with Josh unable to get a 2nd scoring ride and ending up 4th. This left Dom and Josh tied for the overall title and making it a 1,2,3 for Cornwall. Well done to all the winners and everyone for surviving in some very challenging surf on Sunday! pics by Keira Ridel For me Kitesurfing has always been an extension of my surfing and a means to ride waves when it's windy using the same board but just adding a kite. The amount of waves you ride and the speed you can get from the kite really helps improve your surfing due to increased time riding waves. In a single two hour kite session at Gwithian, I will probably ride 50+ waves where as when I surf I normally ride around 20. Do the maths it makes sense and the amount of extra days you get especially in Cornwall is just crazy. As well as waves kitesurfing is so much more. You can do massive jumps, throw down tricks, race or even fly above the waves on a Hydrofoil. At Pasty Adventures we offer lessons for all levels from beginner to advanced in all disciplines. Don't delay book your Kitesurfing Lesson in Cornwall with us and open up a whole new world of pleasure. The school is open from Easter. Detail on all our lesson are here- http://www.pastyadventures.co.uk/beginner-kitesurfing-lessons.html If you still need convincing check out this awesome video from Patagonia-
