While the last month has been mostly too windy to Kitesurf in Cornwall, out here in Cape Town it has been unusually quiet on the wind front meaning we have had to hunt for other wind or wait for the SE Cape Doctor to come in late in Table View. Still we have had some amazing sessions, check out this write up by myself and Danny Morrice along with some awesome pics from a NW day at Witsands on Kiteworld -http://www.kiteworldmag.com/features/sessions-cape-of-good-fun/ Please also watch Part 1 of my 3 part Cape Town video series below- Just over a week left in South Africa now then I am off to Morocco to prepare for our upcoming Coaching Holiday in Dakhla. Unfortunately we got skunked with wind and waves meaning there was no final result. After 2 no results this year in Portugal and now Ireland and with no prize money on offer for the Maui event, this signals the end of Lee's World Tour campaign for 2012 with him currently lying in =13th on the IKA rankings. Over the winter Lee has some exciting video projects planned. Like his athlete page on Facebook to keep up to date with whats going on in Pastys World by clicking here Despite the lack of wind and waves for the comp, we still found a couple of gems and had a lot of fun! Thanks to Joe Cockle www.jnpevents.co.uk for the pics Super pleased to announce that Lee finished in 9th place at the recent One Eye Pro in Mauritius. Only losing to event winner Patri in Round 1 and 3rd place finisher Sebastian in Round 5 its a superb result in pumping waves. For a report and pics check out his blog http://www.leepasty.co.uk/1/post/2012/09/9th-ksp-one-eye.html Olly Bridge Pasty Cup 2012 Saturday 26th August saw the country’s top kitesurf racers descend on Mounts Bay for the 2012 Pasty Cup organised by Pasty Adventures Kitesurfing School and run by Penzance Sailing Club. With the buzz surrounding the announcement that Kitesurf racing is an Olympic sport for Rio 2016, the UKs top racers were joined by several newbie’s to the kitesurf race scene including 2 guys who were previously on the Olympic Windsurf development program and are now training for Kitesurfing in Rio, making a fleet of 10 kites flying around Mounts Bay. Rigging up at Long Rock in 18-20 knts of breeze, organiser Lee Harvey went out first on a 12m kite along with Mogsy from Wales who was on a 13m. As soon as they made their way to the start line around 2 miles out to sea the wind notched up and most of the other riders noticed in time and chose more appropriate kite sizes from 7-10m as the wind meter on the committee boat read an average of 25knts with 31knt gusts. With the amazing organisation of the race crew thanks to Mike and co. from Penzance sailing club, the 1st race started on time and was promptly won by UK Tour leader, Olly Bridge (15) from Exmouth followed by his mum, 4 time World Champ, Steph with 2010 UK Champ, Callum Edge fighting hard just behind. The next four races were much the same with Olly winning and some close fought battles along with the occasional big crash behind, as huge gusts blew down the race course. In the 6th and final race, Olly was winning yet again before deciding to head back to the beach on the 2nd lap of the 2 mile course as the wind notched up yet more, knowing that he had already won the prize pasty, due to being allowed to discard your worst result with 5 races to count. Callum seized the opportunity taking the win, which meant he finished just 0.3 points ahead of Steph while Lee struggled again as the breeze increased meaning he had to count a dnf. It was then back to the beach for Prize Giving presented by Alex Hapgood. The unstoppable Olly Bridge took the win and the Pasty Cup 2012 with Callum Edge nudging ahead of Steph for the 1st time ever. Other notable performances came from former windsurfer Tom Squires knocking Lee Pasty out of his normal 4th spot and local boys Ryan Crawford and Craig Smith with a great effort getting round after only recently buying race boards. It was then off to bed for a rest for some while others scored a wave and a few had to leave before heading to the sailing club for curry and a band. All of the sailors loved seeing us kitesurfers out there and there was some great feedback such as- amazing control, such speed, general praise and interest in how well we were going around the course and how good it looked. Mike even said he’d like to see and run an event with 100 kites, so maybe the Kitesurfing Europeans or Worlds will be in Cornwall one day soon? Huge thanks to Penzance Sailing Club, especially Mike for providing the committee boat and being an excellent race officer, Barry and Robin on safety in the rib and for videoing, Joe of www.jnpevents.co.uk for the pics and scoring and big thanks to Mark Chadwick for enabling a kitesurfing event to be held at PZSC. We look forward to coming back for a bigger event next year. Next up for the racers is an RYA Test event in Weymouth in end of September followed by the IKA Worlds in Sardinia 1st week of October. Unfortunately the wind did'nt play ball after Lee dominated his Round 1 heat advancing straight to a round 3 match up with 2008 World Champ, Mitu Monteiro from Cape Verde. After hanging around all week, with the wind teasing and numerous heats starting and stopping, the event finally ended without a result as there were still 2 heats left to run in round 2. Some great waves were had both surfing and kiting at some of Portugals numerous World class spots, with Lee making the most of being away from Cornwall in the sun and having the van to get around, taking with him some of the best kitesurfers and surfers in the World, such as Ozzie wiz kid, Keahi de Aboitiz and former ASP Top 44 surfer Pedro Henrique from Brasil. Check out the small vid from the trip below. So I'm here in Mauritius for the 1st stop of the KSP World Tour and what an amzing place it is here in Le Mourne on the south west tip of the island paradise in the indian ocean. Unfortunately I went out the comp in round 2 as wasn't able to find a decent 2nd wave and kept getting closed down on as i pulled into the barrel but the forecast is looking amazing and it looks like they will run a super session or best tube ride on the weekend so still plenty to come and stay tuned for the finals today with myself in the commentary booth at www.kspworldtour.com I am so impressed with the set up here of flat water inside the lagoon and 2 waves outside on the reef that I am looking at running a trip here next year in conjunction with my sponsors for this event www.sportif.travel cheers lee check my round 2 heat here http://www.livestream.com/extremience/video?clipId=pla_6a24ecc3-34bd-4183-b302-1a83f3b32dd9&utm_source=lslibrary&utm_medium=ui-thumb http://livestre.am/13fRI Kitesurfer, Lee joins the Worlds elite Lee Harvey aka Pasty from Penzance, Cornwall has been selected to compete on the Kite Surf Pro world tour. An extensive voting process was initiated by the International Kiteboarding Association, involving National Kite Associations, the panel of judges and wave riders committee, the IKA industry partners and the world’s kitesurfing media who were asked to submit their Top 15 male and Top 8 Female kitesurf wave riders. These are then added to the 7 pre qualified male riders bringing together the World’s Top 22 male and 8 females to battle out for the 2011 World Kite Surfing crown in the best waves on the planet. The only other UK rider to be selected was 3 x Women’s World Wave champion, Kirsty Jones from Wales. Lee says; ‘I am so stoked to be recognised as one of the best wave riders in the world with a kite and can’t wait to fly the Cornish flag at the best spots in the World. To be listed alongside the sports superstars, is amazing and gives me extra motivation to train hard and represent my country as best as I possibly can. Hopefully I’ll be bringing the World title home to Penzance for Christmas.’ The first stop of the tour is in Mauritius in September, then goes to Peru in October and finally Cape Verde in December where the World Champion will be crowned in the famous right hand point break of Ponta Preta. Lee is now in need of sponsors to help with the travel costs.
